The sextet Fingerprints moves in the most sensuous ways on their new recording Dream Life from Pacific Coast Jazz Records. If there is such a genre as sunny jazz, Fingerprints epitomize its principles. If you are looking for a soundtrack that exudes love from every pore, Dream Life is it.
The frilly saxophone twirls of “Tell Me A Bedtime Story” are lovingly trellised in silky flute swirls performed by guest musician Shelley Carroll. Carroll also kindles a throng of ruffling flutters along “Max Master” which are ribbed in soothing guitar riffs. The workmanship in the tracks is exquisite as the willowy guitar pickings of Robert Lacroix in “Lady Bird” are bowed in the bossa nova tinged beats of Arjuna Contreras, and the slinky guitar furls of Todd Parsnow bask “What Were You Thinking” in dreamy passages. The relaxing surf of “Lonesome Rhodes” is driven by Larry Davis’ ruminating keys, and the lyrical phrasing of Lacroix’s guitar chords are fondled by the caressing curls of Carroll’s sax in “Only You.”
The group also equips their tracks with a funky style chassis like the jutting saxophone twits of John Gordon energized by a hearty handclapping backbeat in “Anything For You” and the funky soul scrolls penned by Bernard Wright on the synth bass in the title track. The gospel based swags and funk-induced raptures along “I Am A Man” permeate a spiritual feel as the bluesy soul timbres of vocalist Tim Jones are silhouette by the calming lobes of trombonist Mark Franklin. The soothing corpuscles of guitarist Mark Harper are piped in sleek saxophone wisps along “For You I Will,” and the feathery dotting of the piano keys in “Acoustic Soul” are embellished with an electro-club flare in the remix version of the track performed by Richard Smith.
The sextet of Fingerprints calls on a number of guest musicians for Dream Life producing a community feel on the album. The amenable current coursing through the recording is luxuriating and shows that love is a sentiment which is inclusive.
