Guitarist/composer/vocalist Frank DiBussolo has a flare for sophisticated jazz and is able to hold audiences in awe of the smooth agility in the calculated strokes of his finger pickings.  His new CD, Average White Cats from Lost World Music label demonstrates his venerable talent to compose striking sonic mosaics which calm the emotions and put the mind at peace.  Joined by woodwind instrumentalist Greg Edwards, keyboardist Carl Snyder, double bassist Greg Eicher, and drummer Sean Kennedy, DiBussolo moves sensually through the melodic progressions and soft reclines in the melodic phrases participating in the swirling symphonies and forging peaks and lows which produce lush, ambient mazes.

“Blue Heron” opens the album sounding like an ode to the romantically bent serenades of Spanish-laden guitar strings as the curlicue gilding etched by the trembling horns lace-up the center.  The bop-dimpled guitar strings of “Loco Linda” are grazed by the high top kicks of the drum strikes producing a leisurely gait in the track.  The funky ripples of the guitar pickings strewn across the title track flex in sync with the splashing crests of the drumbeats and the bluesy tones of the woodwinds, which move into a rumba pulse in “Ha! Gringo” propelled by a Latin-bounce in the swiveling motions of the woodwinds.  The torchlight glimmers of “Gracie And Kate” have an alluring sonic glide that transpires into a silky resonance in the drumbeats speared by the giddy jumps of DiBussolo’s guitar pickings.

Whether the tunes have a contemplative penchant like “Vin Dolce” or a perky rustling in the lifts and retractions as exemplified by the horns imprinted along “Una Samba Pequena,” DiBussolo infuses the songs with well-honed versings that ignite positive sensations.  The wispy flutters pilling “When You’re Smiling” are ruminating, and the flouncing twinkles of the horns strolling along “Barbara” are elegantly lobed showcasing DiBussolo’s inclination for sophisticated phrasing.

Frank DiBussolo’s material is an aggregate of all his musical experiences having been a professional musician for over forty years.  He has worked with a vast array of artists including Frank Sinatra, Diana Ross, Art Blakey, and Bucky Pizzarelli to name a few.  He has served on the facilities of Swarthmore College, Moravian College, Lehigh University, and the Combs College of Music, and is currently the Director of the Guitar and Jazz Studies Department at the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Performing Arts.  With that said, Frank DiBussolo’s album Average White Cats bridges nostalgic jazz with modern bop and Latin grooves concocting a melodic brew that warms the soul and puts the emotions in a reposing mode.
